In June, Digita signed an agreement with Social Media Fab Oy to broadcast Internet TV channel for the first time on Digita’s terrestrial television. SoMeTV was launched on 15 June 2018 on Channel 19. The channel can be watched on HbbTVs connected to the Internet.

SoMeTV combines traditional TV and social media into an entertainment package with daily live broadcasts and a video library. In addition to HbbTV, you can watch SoMeTV at www.tvsome.fi and on YouTube (channel: tvsome).

“We were the first in Finland to launch an influencer marketing concept, the Woi.fi community. Inspired by it, we decided to offer entertainment to all Finns who don’t necessarily keep up with social media in their daily lives – TV is still the top choice for watching TV shows. For this reason, we believe that social media content works really well on TV, too, alongside Internet TV and YouTube,” says Heidi Tammiruusu, CEO of Social Media Fab Oy.

Social Media Fab streams six hours of daily programming on SoMeTV. It can be watched on the channel for 24 hours.

“The channel presents shows produced by YouTube and social media influencers, and content made by the channel. Celebrities and social media personalities, such as Niko Saarinen, Sauli Koskinen, Elias & Vilma and Daniel Lehtonen & Eve, ensure that the shows provide real entertainment. Viewers can also submit their own videos to the channel,” says Tammiruusu.

Breaking new ground in TV

SoMeTV, distributed via HbbTV, is the first Internet TV content in the business that’s simultaneously shown on traditional TV screens.

“Whereas online and TV have traditionally been considered competitors, thanks to SoMeTV we can combine distribution channels into a broader package that benefits both viewers and media companies,” says Tatu Kaskela, Head of Business in charge of Digita’s online distribution.

Digita’s development project solutions enable ramping up online content for bigger screens over the Internet, with TV broadcast to wide audiences as the natural next step.

“TV has a strong role in Finnish society. Studies have shown that it’s effective and influential, reaching large numbers of people at the same time. In our view, it’s worthwhile to highlight the most popular online content on bigger screens, too.”

There are already 350,000 HbbTVs in Finland

An HbbTV is a smart television that enables providing additional services for TV channels and specific shows. Two examples of these additional services enabled by HbbTVs are using your remote control to cast votes on TV shows and interactive TV advertising. HbbTV services for channels are currently available on Digita’s terrestrial television network and Telia’s cable TV.

The popularity of HbbTVs is rising constantly. At present, more than 350,000 devices use HbbTV services actively, over 2.5 times more than a year earlier. Digita estimates that in 2020, when the terrestrial network switches over to a new distribution technology, the number of hybrid TVs will be over one million.
