Communications network company Digita and electricity network company Caruna have agreed upon the sale of masts decommissioned by Caruna to Digita.

“The improvement of Finland’s competitiveness is based on smart infrastructure. Smart infrastructure needs to be built in cooperation with different operators. This means that stronger cooperation between different sectors and the companies operating in them is needed in Finland. Building cooperation like this requires a strong commitment from all parties, and the recently concluded mast sale is an excellent example of new and cost-effective smart infrastructure construction based on a circular economy,” says Kosti Rautiainen, Director of Caruna’s Electrical Network Unit, explaining the background of the deal.

The companies have agreed to a transaction that will involve transferring ownership of Caruna’s telecommunication masts to Digita. The masts are located across Caruna’s operating area. The southernmost masts are located in Leppävaara in Espoo and on the Islands of Turku, while the northernmost ones are located in Posio, Lapland.

The masts were previously used to manage the electricity network, transmitting information via radio between Caruna’s network control station and primary substations. The radio network has been replaced with fibre-optic, satellite and mobile connections, and Caruna no longer has a use for the masts. Digita, on the other hand, can utilise the masts as part of its extensive and reliable IoT network and to offer high-quality infrastructure services to other telecommunications operators.

“We are pleased to be able to utilise Caruna’s existing masts to offer new and increasingly diverse telecommunications services. The significance of mast infrastructure is growing with the introduction of new technologies such as 5G and the services that come with them. At Digita, we want to offer our operator customers ever more comprehensive services and to help develop mobile networks in Finland by doing so,” says Digita’s COO Markus Ala-Hautala.
