The distribution of Yle’s HD channels starts on Digita’s nationwide terrestrial television network at the end of March.

When it starts on the morning of 31 March 2020, the network covers as much as 90% of the population, with the channel coverage expanded to the entire country by the beginning of June. After that, Yle’s television channels can be watched in high definition throughout Finland through all distribution channels.

“With the current exceptional situation in Finland and the entire world, shared moments are more important than ever. Television gathers Finns for shared experiences, and Yle can now provide these moments with even higher HD quality throughout the country,” says Janne Yli-Äyhö, CTO at Yle.

“Finnish antenna households have been waiting for the transition to high definition broadcasts for a long time, while cable and satellite users have been viewing channels in HD already for many years.”

Digita’s nationwide network ensures that all Finns regardless of their age, place of residence and their broadband speed can obtain up-to-date information even in exceptional circumstances.

“We are extremely pleased that we can offer Yle’s HD broadcasts to the terrestrial network viewers and we hope that we’ll be able to include the other main channels in HD on the national network in the near future,” says Vesa Tykkyläinen, CEO of Digita.

For the time being, Yle’s current standard-level (SD) television channels are available as before.

How to view Yle’s HD channels on Digita’s terrestrial network at the latest on 1 June 2020

On the morning of 31 March, 2020, Yle’s channels will be available in Digita’s UHF network’s multiplex B on channels 21, 22 and 25. Additional information on the expanded coverage is available on Digita website digita.fi/hd2020.

A UHF antenna is sufficient for receiving the broadcasts, and you will also need an HD receiver to view high definition broadcasts. These include a television equipped with a T2 tuner or a T2 digital set-top box.

If you cannot view the channels automatically after the transition, the receiver may require a new channel search or that factory settings are restored. In buildings that have a master antenna, the antenna system may require changes in order to receive Yle’s HD channels.
