The City of Kaarina water supply plant and Digita have started cooperation in the digitalisation of water services. The area of the water supply plant will transition to remotely readable water meters that enable the real-time monitoring of water consumption. The digitalisation of water services makes use of Digita’s LoRaWAN-based IoT network.

The installation of new remotely readable water meters was launched in the autumn of 2020, and the aim is to replace the 7,000 water meters in the area with remotely readable ones in the coming years. “In the early stages of the project, we explored different options for the implementation of remote reading. The affordable price level of the LoRaWAN network and the broad meter selection were decisive in the process, and we set out to implement the project together with Digita”, says Simo Salonen, Network Engineer at the City of Kaarina water supply plant.

The digitalisation of water services brings many benefits to both the water supply plant and end customers. “With the information obtained from remotely readable water and flow meters, we can better calculate the water balance, which allows us to reduce leakage water, for example. Customers will also benefit from the reform as, instead of the current estimate-based invoices, we are able to bill according to actual water consumption. In the future, our customers will also be able to obtain real-time reading data on water usage”, Salonen adds.

Digita’s LoRaWAN network enables the cost-effective and easy collection of data from remotely readable water maters in a geographically widespread water infrastructure. “Projects related to remote water reading are always carried out while listening to the customer’s needs, and we expand our network according to the needs of customers. We are pleased to be able to implement the digitalisation of water services together with the City of Kaarina water supply”, adds Mona Miettinen, Sales Manager, IoT Services at Digita.
