Yle, Nokia, and Digita piloted a 5G private network in television production
Published: 12.11.2025
Yle, Nokia, and Digita conducted a joint experiment utilizing 5G technology in television program production. Alongside traditional production methods, a wireless camera operating via a 5G network was introduced. The aim was to demonstrate how 5G enables wireless image transmission with minimal delay, increasing mobility and efficiency in studio productions.
A 5G private wireless network, implemented by Digita and based on Nokia’s technology, was built for the studio of the program “Elämäni Biisi”. Using this network, Yle operated a camera wirelessly and transmitted footage for monitoring and recording to assess image quality. The solution was used to evaluate the consistency of image quality, production agility, and new working methods.
“The experiment was successful and met its objectives. At Yle, we are constantly exploring the application of new technology in program production, and these kinds of collaborative trials always provide new perspectives for future work. Wireless solutions bring freedom and flexibility to program production. With 5G, we can transmit high-quality video, which is critical for live broadcasts. Yle has been testing the suitability of mobile network technology for audio and video production for years, and already a significant portion of Yle’s live production signals from the field are transmitted using broadband networks instead of dedicated connections,” says Olli Sipilä, Head of Distribution Technology at Yle.
“A private 5G network offers a stable and low-latency connection suitable even for the most demanding media productions. We are proud to demonstrate together with Yle how 5G is transforming production methods and bringing cost-efficiency and new opportunities to the Finnish media sector,” says Pekka Koskinen, Sales Director for Digita’s Private Network Business.
“This collaboration shows how far 5G technology has come and how it enables new, real-time production solutions. We are pleased to be part of building the future of media production together with Digita and Yle,” says Pekka Hakala, Regional Sales Leader at Nokia.
Yle, Nokia, and Digita will continue their collaboration to determine where the use of a 5G private network brings the greatest benefits to television production and how its use could be expanded in the future.
