Energy company St1 and Digita have agreed upon a collaborative project in which Digita will map the suitability of land used for the service station network of St1 and Shell for potential telecom base station locations. A total of more than 400 St1 and Shell stations around Finland are part of the St1 network.

With the advent of 5G technology, the number of services and volume of data traffic on mobile networks will grow larger than ever. In addition to growing mobile phone data traffic, the increasing need for base station locations will also be driven by the higher frequencies utilised by 5G networks. St1 and Digita are currently assessing the suitability of the land used by the petrol station network for complementing mobile networks and opening up even better usage opportunities for mobile data.

“Our two-brand station network is spread comprehensively across the whole country. The location of petrol stations at traffic hubs allows them to have diverse roles in society,” St1 Oy’s Network Director Juha Vanninen explains.

“We are very pleased with the collaboration we are launching with St1. As a significant independent digital infrastructure provider, we want to develop and offer the infrastructure our customers need and, by doing so, contribute to the wider development of mobile networks in Finland. St1’s network of stations along the country’s main roads will certainly complement existing networks,” Digita’s COO Markus Ala-Hautala says.
