Porolive Surpasses 1.3 Million Views – Reindeer Tracking with IoT Technology Boosts Efficiency in Reindeer Husbandry

Published: 16.12.2025

HELSINKI December 16, 2025 - Since December 1st, Porolive, which began broadcasting on antenna network channel 24 and the digita.fi website, has found its way into the hearts of Finns. The milestone of 1.3 million views was surpassed yesterday, and the journeys of reindeer Kaija, Seppo, and Paula can still be followed until Christmas Eve. The tracking of Lapland’s reindeer has become a concrete example of efficiency and business development, with potential applications across industry, construction, and logistics sectors.

The live broadcast follows the travels of three reindeer —Kaija, Paula, and Seppo— in the fells of Lapland, using tracking technology developed by Ranniot, which utilizes Digita’s nationwide IoT network based on LoRaWAN technology for data transmission.

The solution demonstrated by Porolive operates on the same principle for industrial and logistics needs: the same technology can bring transparency and control to a company’s equipment, machinery, and supply chains anywhere in Finland.

“Equipment, transports, machines, animals, and materials often disappear for a simple reason: their movements are not recorded or monitored in real time. Some equipment moves from one worksite to another without any record, some are left at depots or in storage corners, and some end up in the wrong place due to haste or human error. When visibility is lacking, so are profits,” says Tuomas Kolkka, VP, IoT Business at Digita.

“Many companies think this only concerns large operators, but in reality, tracking even just a few cars, trailers, or generators can yield potential savings from the very first month,” Kolkka continues.

Reindeers Have Been Tracked with IoT Technology for Years

Digita’s Porolive makes visible how positioning works at its best: real-time information, less waste, and more control. A concrete example is that the distance traveled by Kaija, Seppo, and Paula can be tracked very precisely. Currently, Kaija is leading the reindeer race with 63 kilometers.

Ranniot and Digita have collaborated on the digitalization of reindeer tracking since the early 2010s. Locating reindeer via the IoT network has brought the ancient reindeer husbandry industry into the digital age.

“At one point, we wondered with other reindeer owners why it is that wagtails are tracked from Rovaniemi to Africa, but we can’t determine the location of our reindeers. We have a large reindeer herding district, 4,000 square kilometers in area, and in autumn it was difficult to find the reindeer due to natural conditions,” says Seppo Koivisto from Palojärvi Reindeer Herding Cooperative.

“About twenty years ago, the cooperative logged over 3,000 workdays, and today it has normalized to 1,200–1,300 workdays thanks to knowing where the reindeer are moving. The reindeer can be gathered in a controlled manner when needed,” Koivisto continues. Koivisto has been involved in the development of reindeer tracking devices from the very beginning.

The Porolive broadcast ends on Christmas Eve before the Declaration of Christmas Peace. The broadcast can be followed online at https://digita.fi/porolive and on antenna TV channel 24.

To view Porolive on television, antenna TV households need to rescan their channels. Most receivers will search for channels automatically. Some older receivers may require a factory reset before rescanning. Instructions for tuning channels can be found in the device’s user manual and on the digita.fi website.

If media wishes to use the stream on their own distribution channels, they can contact Digita’s communications.
