Now We Follow Kaija, Paula, and Seppo – The Creators of Betonilive Launch a New Kind of Live Broadcast on Finnish Television in December

HELSINKI December 1, 2025 - In December, Finns will be able to follow reindeer roaming the fells of Lapland in real time on television and online. The Porolive broadcast begins on December 1 on terrestrial network channel 24 and on the digita.fi website, continuing until Christmas Eve. Behind the program are Digita, which previously achieved great popularity with Betonilive in the spring, and Ranniot, who developed the tracking application for reindeer owners.
Over the years, Finland has seen various animal live streams, but never before has the journey of reindeer been tracked on terrestrial television with such precision. Throughout December, the program utilizes tracking solution developed by Ranniot, which uses Digita’s nationwide IoT network based on LoRaWAN technology for data transmission. Solution displays the routes and distances traveled by the selected reindeers—Kaija, Paula, and Seppo—directly on the screen. At the same time, live footage from Nuuksio Reindeer Park is shown in the background.
“Tracking reindeer is an old tradition, which today relies largely on tracking technology. Nowadays, reindeer are not monitored by searching for them with snowmobiles, but by checking their location in an app. We want to open this world to viewers and, of course, give them the opportunity to see live what kinds of journeys these magnificent animals actually make. Porolive combines tradition and technology in a way never seen before,” says Digita’s IoT Business Director Tuomas Kolkka.
“Our goal is to create a warm-hearted live broadcast where the whole family can follow the reindeers’ journey together and guess who will ultimately travel the farthest and perhaps become Santa’s sleigh leader. At the same time, we might finally find out how long the famous ‘poronkusema’ really is,” Kolkka smiles.
Reindeer Have Been Tracked with IoT Technology for Years
Ranniot and Digita have been collaborating on the digitalization of reindeer tracking since the 2010s. This has brought the ancient profession of reindeer herders into the digital age.
“Today, few of these professionals are full-time reindeer workers, and this kind of technology has sped up the work and made it possible to do other things alongside. With the live broadcast, we wanted to give viewers the chance to see how reindeers really move in Lapland and how IoT technology enables precise and real-time tracking in demanding conditions,” says Ranniot’s CEO Petri Särkisaari.
The Porolive broadcast starts on December 1 at 11:00 a.m. and ends on Christmas Eve before the declaration of Christmas peace. The broadcast can be followed online at digita.fi/porolive and on terrestrial TV channel 24. It can also be viewed on Outshine’s digital outdoor advertising screens in downtown Helsinki.
To view Porolive on television, households using terrestrial TV must rescan their channels. Most receivers will search for channels automatically. Some older receivers may require a factory reset before rescanning. Instructions for tuning channels can be found in the device’s user manual and on the digita.fi website.
If the media wishes to use the stream in their own distribution channels, they can contact Digita’s communications.
