Fortum will begin using Digita’s nationwide IoT network, based on LoRaWAN technology, in its SmartLiving services.

The network can be used for purposes such as
controlling residential indoor air conditions and managing heat consumption.
Fortum’s SmartLiving service is based on room-by-room temperature measurements
and self-adjusting heating control using artificial intelligence. The service
already covers 2,600 apartments.

”Fortum’s Smart Living Services aim to
increase the comfort of living in apartments and increase the energy efficiency
of entire properties. The SmartLiving system measures the temperature and
humidity of apartments, and takes account of weather forecasts. Based on this
information, the system adjusts to the correct heating need at any given time
for each apartment,” says Timo
Aaltonen
, Head of Property Solutions, Fortum SmartLiving.

”We chose LoRaWAN as one of the
technologies we use, due to its technical features. We chose Digita as a
network operator because its fault-tolerant network, which has dense coverage
in the cities, enables data transfer even in challenging locations,”
Aaltonen continues.

”Fortum has been an innovative pioneer in
the energy sector, and we are delighted to offer Finland’s largest energy
company our nationwide LoRaWAN network for the development of the SmartLiving
business,” says Ari Kuukka, Director
IoT services at Digita.
