Digita and Keikalla.fi are creating Christmas cheer for Finns by piloting a new Hybrid TV service on terrestrial television in the form of three live Christmas concerts during the week of Christmas. The pilot project will bring the Keikalla.fi service to television for the period of 1–23 December 2020. The actual piloted service and its features will become available on 14 December. The service will be available on channel 101 of Digita’s terrestrial multiplex E, which covers 98 per cent of the population.

The pilot project will broadcast Tampere Theatre’s performances of A Christmas Carol on 21 and 22 December and Jarkko Ahola’s concert at Tampere Cathedral on 22 December, made available by Rockway Oy’s Keikalla.fi service.

“The pilot project utilises Hybrid TV to offer the advantages of television to both consumers and the producers of paid content. The pilot project demonstrates how television-based distribution is possible even with small amounts of content without sacrificing the publisher’s business model. The concept will also be developed further: we strive to introduce an entirely new way of finding and consuming content to Finnish homes – one that, up till now, has only been available online,” says Juha Ourila, Business Development Manager at Digita.

“We at Rockway are very excited about this pilot project. We have been cooperating for about six months in preparation for this, and both parties believe that this has potential to be the beginning of a long and mutually beneficial collaboration. I would like to thank Digita for approaching this with an open mind and a readiness to try something genuinely new, as well as doing their part to help the whole event industry during this prolonged and difficult situation. Naturally, this is also an excellent opportunity for Finnish performers and artists,” says Niklas Lindholm, founder of the Keikalla.fi service and CEO of Rockway Oy.

“As a terminal device, television is still the best way of consuming video content. A large screen, good image and sound quality, internet connectivity, an easy-to-use interface and a sense of community with your family and friends are some of the essential strengths of television. For publishers, television offers an easy and cost-effective way of reaching a mass audience made up of all target groups,” Juha Ourila says.

How do viewers access the service?

The Keikalla.fi service can be accessed through the terrestrial television network with a smart TV that has Hybrid TV functionality and which is connected to the internet. To watch the concert, viewers must have a Keikalla.fi account and a concert ticket, which is available at Lippu.fi. Viewers can gain access to the broadcast by entering the code they get from Lippu.fi into the Keikalla.fi service, after which they can go to channel 101 on their television for further instructions.
