Digita and Kymen Vesi’s cooperation is progressing according to schedule—10,000 water meters already replaced

Helsinki May 6, 2025 - Digita and Kymen Vesi have been collaborating on the digitalization of water services since 2018. The aim of the partnership has been to replace traditional water meters with remotely readable ones. To date, more than 10,000 remote meters have been installed out of a total of approximately 15,000 meters to be replaced.
The aim is to replace all meters with new ones by the end of 2026. Mass replacements of the meter pool began in early 2022.
Remote meters provide convenience for both customers and professionals. Customers no longer need to report their water meter readings separately, as the information is transferred to the water utility online. In addition, invoicing is more real-time compared to before, and no adjustment invoices are needed. Customers can also monitor their own water consumption on a daily basis, which reduces unnecessary water usage.
Remote meters also streamline the daily work of water utility employees.
“Remote water meters allow us to collect more data from the water supply network than before. With this data, we can better determine areas such as leakage zones and target them for investigation or repair measures. This also has positive effects on the environment,” says Joonas Leinonen, Water Supply Manager at Kymen Vesi.
The long-standing cooperation has earned praise from both parties.
“Cooperation has been easy with an active, committed, and progressive customer. Kymen Vesi was one of our first remote-reading customers, and through this cooperation, Digita has also developed its activities in water utility cooperation,” says Mona Miettinen, Sales Manager for Digita’s IoT business.
“We have had excellent cooperation with Digita from the very beginning, and the online service provided by Digita has also worked well. We work together to continuously analyze things like dead zones, and if any issues are found, Digita quickly adds more base stations,” Leinonen adds.
Remote meters are a long-awaited innovation in the industry and a major step forward in water management, an area in which Finland is well ahead of the rest of Europe.
“Looking ahead, remote meters and increasing amounts of data will enable the digital development of water supply networks. Water measurement is continuous, and the life cycle of a single water meter is approximately 10–15 years. We certainly hope that this will form the basis for long-term cooperation with Digita,” Leinonen predicts.
