A new mast will be built in Karigasniemi to secure service continuity in Northern Lapland
Published: 1.9.2026
Digita is building a new mast in Karigasniemi to replace the old one. The new mast will ensure the continuity of TV, radio and other critical services well into the future. Construction work on the mast will take place on weekdays between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. from 2 September to 9 October 2026. The work may cause short interruptions and reductions in transmission power for radio and TV broadcasts during the project.
The old mast in Karigasniemi has reached the end of its life cycle. The new mast being built to replace it will enable the reliable continuation of important communications services in the area for decades to come.
“The Karigasniemi project is a good example of how the continuity of services that are also critical from the perspective of security of supply is ensured in a long-term manner across Finland. Radio and TV services as well as high-quality mobile services are transmitted from the Karigasniemi mast. The mast’s coverage area also extends to the border region between Finland and Norway, making it an important part of the communications infrastructure in the north as a whole,” says Riku Helander, CEO of Digita.
The project is being carried out in close cooperation between Digita’s own expert team and its partners. Comtower Finland Oy is responsible for constructing the mast, while Voimatel Oy is responsible for transferring and installing the equipment. The experience of all parties in northern conditions and their ability to carry out the work safely in a demanding environment have been particularly important.
The project is carefully taking environmental and landscape impacts into account. The old mast will be dismantled after the new one has been commissioned, and its materials will be recycled appropriately. This will ensure that multiple masts are not left in the area and that landscape impacts are minimised.
Short interruptions and reductions in transmission power possible during the project from 2 September to 9 October 2026
The transfer of services from the old mast to the new one will be carried out in a controlled and phased manner. The necessary antennas, cabling and systems will be installed in the new mast before commissioning so that the transfers can be carried out as safely as possible and any service interruptions for end users remain short.
Possible interruptions and reductions in transmission power will affect the following radio and TV services:
- Yle Sámi Radio, Yle Radio Suomi Rovaniemi, Yle Radio 1 and YleX
- Yle TV 1 HD, Yle TV 2 HD, MTV3 HD, Nelonen HD, Yle Teema & Fem HD, onniTV HDThe work will also affect the following transmitter stations: Utsjoki Nuvvus, Utsjoki Polvarinniemi and Utsjoki Outakoski.
We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause to the services.
