There is no going back. The amount of data moving through the network has taken a huge leap during the coronavirus period, and industries where data and data transfer are still completely irrelevant are few and far between.

At the same time, data transfer volumes are only growing, growing and growing, says Teemu Lampila, head of Digita’s Data Center business. This means that more and more data also needs to be stored on servers and in data centers.

So what industries should now be thinking about solutions to increase data capacity?

All of them, says Lampila. Data usage volumes are increasing everywhere, in all sectors.

“This is the case in, for example, the information management of pharmacies, various sectors of industry and the operations of hospital districts”, Lampila says.

“Let’s consider pharmacies – a lot of information is stored and transmitted through them every day. After all, all prescriptions are located on servers.”

Digita’s data center services offer customers premises, electricity, state-of-the-art telecommunications capabilities and a safe location for servers on which various services can be run, to be used by companies in any industry.

The data centers of large technology giants, such as the Google server center built in an old paper mill in Hamina, receive the most public attention.

However, this does not at all correspond to the full picture of data centers. On the contrary, as the 5G network develops, more agile data centers are increasingly needed all over Finland. “Digita’s strength is that it can build a data center suited to its customer specifically anywhere in Finland”, says Lampila.  Digita’s 38 radio and TV stations around Finland create the basis for the data center network, but data centers will also be built in city centres in the future.

“Digita’s strength is that it can build a data center suited to its customer specifically anywhere in Finland”, says Lampila.

At the heart of the solutions is high-quality infrastructure, says Lampila. Data centers require optimal temperature and humidity conditions, as well as guaranteed cooling and power supply. The northern weather conditions in Finland are very favourable for data centers.

Lampila, who works from Ruka and Oulu, but also all over Finland, is only 40, but he has held various positions at Digita since 2004. With his three-person team, he is leading a fast-growing field at Digita. Important support is provided by Digita’s nationwide field personnel and, in particular, the maintenance team specialising in data centers located in Pasila. The task is extremely interesting, as the need for data center services is growing all the time, Lampila says.

“The growth prospects are staggering.”
