Digita's IoT solutions have been widely deployed in many industries throughout Finland. Digita's COO Markus Ala-Hautala explains how various digital solutions make everyday life easier, improve efficiency and reduce the carbon footprint.

According to Markus Ala-Hautala, it is unnecessary to travel to collect data. All decisions that are made based on incomplete information are risks. All energy that is produced without any need must be minimised. A network based on Digita’s LoRaWAN technology enables energy-efficient long-range IoT solutions for various needs. While exact location information and the right data in the right place may increase efficiency significantly and prevent major damage, data can also be used to efficiently reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

“Smart data provided by measuring devices makes the carbon footprint concrete and visible while providing an opportunity to reduce the carbon footprint by taking appropriate measures based on the obtained data,” Ala-Hautala says. Ala-Hautala is of the opinion that digital solutions play a key role when weighing various methods for reducing emissions. Digita’s services provide valuable data, which enables better solutions. “When emissions can be measured and they are concrete, it is also easier to reduce them,” Ala-Hautala states.

You get what you measure

IoT solutions enable accurate measuring and monitoring of various things.

For example, Digita’s IoT technology is used to monitor the quality of indoor air and meters help optimise water resources management and electricity production in many cities and municipalities. In addition, IoT is an efficient tool for locating various things, such as faults in electric cables and reindeer roaming the fells in Lapland.

“Digita has developed positioning solutions and the digitalisation of positioning strongly over the past few years. For example, expensive cable reels may even today still remain in the terrain without exact information on their location. Positioning provides detailed information on the location of the reels and it is also possible to set up alerts if any reels are moving when they shouldn’t be doing that,” Ala-Hautala says.

Measuring the correct things makes it possible to take more sensible measures and to improve the efficiency of operations while reducing the carbon footprint. Smart solutions related to energy consumption increase the consumers’ energy awareness and enable new services.

“All energy that is produced in vain generates emissions. Digita’s IoT technology helps you focus on the essential things. Meters send to customers up-to-date and detailed data on what is going on at the measurement point. This saves people’s time while it also eliminates unnecessary emissions,” Ala-Hautala says.

Smoother life and mind

IoT solutions enable the digitisation of new things and phenomena. For example, Digita’s technology enables Finnish cities to use their personnel and production resources efficiently. According to Ala-Hautala, this may mean, for example, emptying rubbish bins when they are full or optimising public transport.  Finding a parking space is also easier when you know where to look. Digita’s aim is to provide property owners, cities, farmers and industry with opportunities to develop new cost and energy-efficient services.  In addition, Digita wants to help its customers find solutions to their problems. Solutions that make life easier also provide users with peace of mind. Cabin owners can sleep peacefully when they always know the temperature inside the cabin and the condition of water pipes.
