Digita and Outokumpu collaborate to deploy private 5G network at the Kemi mine

HELSINKI December 19, 2025 - Digita and Outokumpu will collaborate to deploy a private 5G wireless network at the Kemi mine to support the mine’s digitalization and automation initiatives. The collaboration brings together Outokumpu’s mining expertise and Digita’s private wireless capabilities to explore new digital solutions in real mining conditions. The new network will provide secure, high-performance connectivity to enable more efficient, data-driven and safer mining operations.

The private 5G solution ensures reliable data transmission and low-latency communication deep underground, creating the foundation for new digital use cases that enhance efficiency and safety. The collaboration begins with a focused deployment in the production environment, where selected use cases will be verified under real operating conditions.

High-performance connectivity: Dedicated private 5G network providing consistent coverage and capacity throughout the mine environment.

Remote video and analytics: Real-time video streams enable engineers to analyze rock quality and optimize production processes.

Drones and remote operations: 5G connectivity supports flying drones inside the mine and remote-controlled equipment, reducing human exposure in demanding conditions.

Improved operational safety: Private 5G reduces the need for personnel in challenging underground locations and supports safer, more predictable operations.

Path toward autonomous mining: The solution offers a scalable platform for Outokumpu’s next steps in automation, bringing the mine closer to autonomous operations.
